Asahikawa's Asahiyama Zoo is Japan's northernmost zoo. Due to the popularity of the orangutan, penguin, polar bear, and seal exhibits, it surprisingly drew the highest number of visitors (over 1.27 million) in Japan in 2004...more than Tokyo's Ueno Zoo. This is no small task, considering Asahikawa, with 360,000 residents, is located on the northern island of Hokkaido. The zoo has 815 animals belonging to 150 species. One of the highlights in winter is the penguin walk.
